Spectrum Award of Merit: Ceramic and Porcelain Tile
Mosaic
for the lobby of the NIMET Nanoscale Research Facility at the
University of Florida, Gainesville. The composition overlays
three images from contemporary research within the field of nanotechnology:
a carbon nanotube; the diffraction pattern of an icosahedral
quasicrystal; and a network of defects in a crystal of silicon
carbide.
A
small, marble-sized gold tile in the middle of the mosaic
refers to the scale of nanotechnology: if a nanometer were
equal in size to a marble, then a meter would be equal in
size to the diameter of the earth. |
